Second Bangladeshi Youth Killed by BSF at Kulaura Border This Year
A young Bangladeshi man, Tara Mia, died this past Saturday night. India’s Border Security Force (BSF) shot him along the Kulaura border in Moulvibazar. This incident is the second of its kind this year in the area.
Tara Mia was 20 years old. He was the son of Abdul Malek. His family lives in the Muraichhara slum area of Karmadha union. The shooting happened at the Maguruli border point. This is in Prithimpasha union of Kulaura upazila.
Officials from Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) gave details. Around 3:30 AM on Sunday, a group of four to five Bangladeshi smugglers crossed the border. They went about 500 yards into India. A patrol team from the BSF’s 199 Battalion Maguruli camp then opened fire. Tara Mia died instantly. His companions ran back to Bangladesh.
Lieutenant Colonel Sarker Asif Mahmud commands the BGB’s 46 Battalion. He said Tara Mia was involved in smuggling. His relatives also confirmed this to officials. The BSF took Tara Mia’s body. They will hand it over to his family after legal steps are completed. A case has been filed against Tara Mia at Kulaura police station for smuggling.
Another similar incident happened on June 12 this year. Mujib Ali, also 20, was killed by BSF firing. This took place along the border in Dattagram village. The BSF later returned Mujib Ali’s body to his family. After that incident, the Border Guard Bangladesh sent a protest letter to the BSF.
The Maguruli border is under the BGB’s 46 Battalion. This unit is based in Sreemangal.
