Solar Wells Bring Safe Water to 12,500 in Climate-Hit Bangladesh Coasts
SOS Children’s Villages Bangladesh and Eastern Bank PLC (EBL) launched a project. They opened 16 solar-powered deep tube-well facilities. These wells provide safe drinking water to coastal communities in Khulna and Bagerhat districts. These areas face climate change challenges. EBL supported this effort as a Climate Action Partner.
The wells are in areas with major salty water problems. They are placed to reach many homes. These facilities will directly help about 12,500 people. Over 20,000 others will get water indirectly. These coastal regions long lacked fresh water.
Many coastal communities in Khulna lack safe drinking water. Their water sources often become salty. Finding good underground water is difficult. Families travel far to collect water. Women and children mostly do this task. It harms their health and schooling.
Each facility uses a deep pump and a water tank. A solar system powers it. This ensures a steady supply of clean water. It is also good for the environment and saves money.
This project offers more than clean water. It will reduce waterborne diseases. It will make daily water collection easier. It also helps communities adapt to climate change. Children’s health and school attendance should improve. Families can then focus on education and work.
The opening ceremony was in Batiaghata. Amir Ejaz Khan, MP for Khulna-1, attended. Md Enamul Haque of SOS Children’s Villages Bangladesh was present. Md Abdullah Al Mamun FCS from EBL also joined. Other local officials and leaders were there.
Mr. Khan said safe water for coastal areas is a national need. He praised the project’s lasting impact. Mr. Haque said children need safe water to grow well. He thanked EBL for their partnership. Hassan O Rashid, EBL’s CEO, said strong communities need basic things. He confirmed EBL is taking real action.
This project shows a shared goal of both organizations. They aim for climate resilience and sustainable community development. Using solar energy for water is a practical, local answer. It helps coastal Bangladesh face climate change problems.
