Speaker Alleges Widespread Corruption and Harmful Foreign Policy
Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, the Speaker of Parliament, made serious accusations on Sunday. He spoke at a discussion in Bhola. He claimed the ruling Awami League government has looted Bangladesh’s national wealth.
Ahmed stated that the party took a lot of money after coming to power. He alleged that foreign aid to the country was stolen. He also said that money from Bangladesh Bank’s foreign reserves was taken. This money was then sent abroad to the Philippines.
People involved in the Philippines part of the incident are now in jail, Ahmed noted. However, he added that no one in Bangladesh has faced justice. The Speaker expressed frustration about government officials. He said many officials are corrupt. Their actions make people’s lives very difficult.
Ahmed pointed out a stark difference. In other countries, crimes are often addressed without public demand. But in Bangladesh, people cry for justice year after year without getting it. He mentioned a former state minister, Saifuzzaman Chowdhury. Ahmed alleged this minister owned many houses abroad. These properties were in London, Dubai, and the United States. He claimed this wealth came from stolen public money.
The Speaker also discussed Bangladesh’s foreign relations. He claimed a neighboring country, India, does not wish for Bangladesh to prosper. He said India is trying to control Bangladesh’s decisions. Ahmed alleged the previous Awami League government protected India’s interests for 16-17 years. He said this was instead of looking after the people of Bangladesh.
Ahmed gave examples of unfair agreements. He said when Indian ships arrive at Chattogram port, other ships must move aside. Indian ships are unloaded first. He also claimed India transports many goods through Bangladesh. He said they pay very little or no duties on these goods. This practice harms Bangladeshi businesses. He also alleged that Indian forces kill people daily along the border.
The discussion took place at the Tajumuddin upazila auditorium. The BNP organized the event.
