Twenty Fire Units Battle Blaze at Gazipur Pharmaceutical Plant
A large fire started at the Drug International Limited pharmaceutical plant in Tongi, Gazipur, on Wednesday morning. The blaze began around 10:15 AM in the Cherag Ali area. Emergency teams rushed to the scene.
Twenty fire service units are fighting the blaze. They came from Tongi, Gazipur, Uttara, and other nearby areas. A team from the Bangladesh Army has also joined the operation. Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members are also helping.
Shaheen Alam, a senior officer from the Tongi fire service, confirmed the incident. Fire service sources received the first report of the fire around 10:15 AM.
The fire reportedly started in Unit 2 of the factory. It then spread quickly to other parts of the building. Flames and thick smoke filled the air. Medicines, production machines, and other materials inside are being damaged.
No casualties have been reported so far. However, officials could not confirm if anyone remained trapped inside the factory. The exact cause of the fire is not yet known. Authorities also do not know which floor the fire started on.
Shaheen Alam explained that the factory building uses steel, aluminum, and glass. These building materials help the fire spread fast. This makes it difficult for firefighters to control the blaze.
Talha Bin Jasim, from the fire service media cell, said a special hazardous materials (HAZMAT) tender was also sent from Mirpur. This unit helps manage dangerous substances.
Gazipur Deputy Commissioner Nurul Karim Bhuiyan said officials are watching the situation closely. He added that law enforcement agencies are assisting the fire service. Their combined effort aims to bring the fire under control as quickly as possible.
