US and Iran Escalate Hostilities, Strait of Hormuz at Core of Renewed Conflict
A fragile peace in the Middle East has shattered, with the United States and Iran now engaged in a six-day exchange of attacks. On Friday, the United States launched strikes against Iran, prompting Tehran to accuse US forces of targeting civilian areas and warning of severe retaliation across the region.
The US military confirmed hitting numerous Iranian military sites. This action was a direct response to recent attacks on commercial ships, following the collapse of an earlier agreement with Tehran.
Hours earlier on Friday, Iran reported missile strikes on an airport and a railway station within its borders. Attacks on two bridges also occurred, resulting in seven fatalities. A senior Iranian military official warned that if the US targets Iranian infrastructure, “all infrastructure across the region will become legitimate targets for Iran.”
This renewed aggression comes just one month after a preliminary deal aimed to resolve the conflict that began in late February with major US-Israeli strikes on Iran. However, tensions have simmered, particularly over the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial shipping lane for global oil supplies.
Iran asserts control over this vital waterway, despite its previous status as an open passage. Tehran had stated it would target regional infrastructure if US President Donald Trump acted on threats to attack Iranian power plants and bridges.
In response to the apparent US strikes on its territory, Iran launched missile attacks against American allies in the Gulf. Both Qatar and Kuwait reported missile strikes on Friday, with journalists in Doha hearing several explosions. Iran’s state media also reported targeting US helicopters and planes at an air base in Bahrain, citing “hostile action” against Iranian urban areas and civilians.
The current events follow Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claiming responsibility for a ballistic missile strike on a US airbase in Jordan the day before. This was in retaliation for what Iran described as an American attack near a children’s cancer hospital in Ahvaz, southwest Iran. Iranian state media stated the hospital was evacuated, with a local teacher describing “very intense” strikes and “at least 11, 12 explosions.”
While Pakistan has urged all parties to halt violence and restart talks, Iran’s chief negotiator indicated that any deal holds meaning only if its terms are implemented. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated President Trump holds Iran “accountable” but remains “open to diplomacy.” However, she added that the president would not allow attacks on ships in the Strait without consequence.
Since last week, renewed US attacks have reportedly resulted in at least 30 deaths in Iran, according to a government spokesperson.
