US Imposes New Tariffs on Canada as Trade Talks Fail

The United States has started to impose new tariffs on some Canadian goods. These tariffs took effect on Saturday. This decision came after trade talks between the two countries failed. Both sides accused each other of ending the negotiations.

The new tariffs affect about $20 billion worth of Canadian products. These include things like wooden ice hockey sticks. This amount is about five percent of Canada’s total exports to the United States. While not a huge economic change, it shows growing problems.

These tariffs raise tensions between United States President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. They will likely make broader talks harder. These talks are meant to renew the US-Mexico-Canada free trade agreement.

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced he has stopped trade negotiations with the US. He said Canada will also impose its own tariffs, “dollar for dollar.” He has told Canada’s negotiators to return to Ottawa.

Mr. Carney said US proposals at the last minute were unfair. He also said they were not good for the economy. He added that these changes made any future deal untrustworthy.

Hours before the tariffs began, the two countries seemed close to an agreement. Sources said that agreement would have lowered tariffs on steel, aluminum, and cars. It might have also brought American alcohol back to Canadian stores.

United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said Canada chose not to finalize the deal. He said this was a missed chance for Canada to work with the US economy, which is growing fast.

A senior official from the Trump administration said the US offer was very good for Canada. But Canada wanted more concessions, especially on steel, aluminum, cars, and lumber. No new talks are planned as the US puts the new tariffs in place.

President Trump had earlier threatened to put duties on many other Canadian goods. These included wine, furniture, and dairy products. Trade experts say these new tariffs could harm some Canadian businesses. They could also lead to job losses.
