US Sanctions Target Cuba’s Industries, Deepen Economic Strain

The United States recently announced another set of economic sanctions against Cuba. These new measures target nine state-owned companies. They include businesses in Cuba’s mining, metal, and construction sectors. This action has put more pressure on the island’s already weak economy.

The US Treasury Department listed the sanctioned entities. Cuba’s Ministry of Construction is among them. Government-controlled import companies also face restrictions. Mining groups like GEOMINSAL are on the list too. Cuba has significant amounts of cobalt and nickel.

Three leaders from the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP) also faced sanctions. ICAP is a state group that works to build international relations.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a statement. He called the individuals and groups national security threats. Mr. Rubio said the companies help Cuba’s “repressive system.” He also accused ICAP of aiding Cuba’s government with a “subversive network.”

US President Donald Trump’s administration aims to change Cuba’s government. This is part of its “maximum pressure” campaign. Cuba is a socialist state, about 145 kilometers from Florida.

In January, the US began a de facto fuel blockade. This cut off Cuba’s oil supply from Venezuela. The US threatened tariffs on any country exporting fuel to Cuba. Only one oil tanker from Russia has docked since.

These US actions have led to problems in Cuba. The island has faced energy blackouts. There are also shortages of important goods. This includes medicine.

United Nations officials have warned about these conditions. They said it could cause a humanitarian crisis. In March, UN experts called the fuel blockade “energy starvation.” They said it was illegal.

UN Human Rights Commissioner Volker Turk also spoke out in April. He noted more infant deaths and fewer children surviving cancer. Mr. Turk said the restrictions directly harm Cubans, especially the most vulnerable. He called for these sanctions to be lifted immediately.

However, the Trump administration argues differently. It says Cuba poses a national security threat to the US. This, it claims, makes the sanctions necessary.
