Surprising Turn: Trump Ally Laura Loomer Meets Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy
Laura Loomer, a notable American far-right activist and close associate of former President Donald Trump, recently met and interviewed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This meeting signals a significant shift for Loomer, who had previously been openly hostile towards Ukraine.
Loomer conducted the interview for her show on the social media platform Rumble. She told her large online following that she now believes she was mistaken in repeating what she called “Russian propaganda.”
The right-wing commentator explained her change of heart, stating that she believes Russia is “evil.” She accused Russia of funding Iran with weapons to harm US soldiers and, in her view, calling for the assassination of President Trump. She indicated that she does not care if some Republicans, who oppose aid to Ukraine, disagree with her new position.
In the past, Loomer was a vocal critic of US support for Kyiv. She once labeled Ukraine as corrupt and full of “Nazi apologists,” a claim similar to those Russia used to justify its 2022 invasion. She also criticized Zelenskyy, calling him a “Jihadi apologist” for meeting with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa.
Zelenskyy’s office welcomed Loomer’s visit, stating it was important for her to see the situation in Ukraine firsthand.
Loomer identifies herself as a “proud Islamophobe” and is a strong supporter of Israel and Trump’s immigration policies. While she holds no official role in the Trump administration, she is widely reported to have a close personal relationship with the former president. She was granted Pentagon press credentials last year.
The meeting between Zelenskyy and Loomer could have notable implications for US support for Ukraine. Donald Trump and some within his political base have often expressed doubts about the extent of US aid to Kyiv. Trump has also promised to end the conflict quickly if re-elected, though previous diplomatic efforts have not led to a breakthrough.
