Medical Crisis Prompts President’s Resignation, Speaker Takes Interim Charge
The nation’s top office saw a significant transition on Friday afternoon as President Mohammed Shahabuddin officially resigned due to severe health complications. Following his resignation, Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad, Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, has immediately assumed the responsibilities of the Acting President, ensuring a smooth continuation of leadership.
President Shahabuddin submitted his signed letter of resignation to Speaker Ahmad at 5:01 PM. The Speaker confirmed this during a press conference held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. He stated that, under Article 54 of the Constitution, he had accepted the resignation and taken on the duties of the President.
In his resignation letter, President Shahabuddin detailed a range of serious health issues. These include heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and kidney problems. He had also undergone coronary bypass surgery in the past. Recent medical tests revealed he suffers from autonomic neuropathy, a condition that can cause him to lose consciousness unexpectedly.
The President explained that these physical challenges have made it impossible for him to carry out his constitutional duties. He noted that he requires long-term medical treatment, leading to his decision to resign.
Speaker Ahmad clarified that his oath of office as Speaker also covers the responsibilities of Acting President when needed. He assured the public that the office of the President would never remain vacant under the Constitution. If the Speaker’s position were to become empty, the Deputy Speaker would then assume those duties.
Addressing public speculation, Speaker Ahmad emphasized that the President’s resignation was solely due to health reasons. He wished Mohammed Shahabuddin a swift recovery. The Speaker added that a written resignation clearly explaining the medical reasons is sufficient, and no extra medical certificate is required in such circumstances. He expressed hope that this clarification would end any confusion or uncertainty.
Jatiya Sangsad Chief Whip Md Nurul Islam, Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal, and other senior officials were present at the press conference, underscoring the gravity and official nature of the announcement.
