Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Turkey Form New Defense Alliance in Mecca
Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey signed an important defense agreement on Friday in Mecca. This new pact brings together three powerful Muslim nations. They aim to strengthen their security and respond to growing regional dangers.
The agreement states that an armed attack against any one country will be seen as an attack on all. This promise is meant to stop future aggression. The three nations said the pact will also promote peace and stability. A Turkish official confirmed the deal is defensive. It is not aimed at any specific country. It also welcomes other nations to join.
The Middle East has seen increased conflict recently. Many countries have faced cross-border attacks or missile fire. Oil shipments in the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global energy, have also been affected. Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey are especially worried by the military actions of Israel and Iran.
Experts believe this agreement carries significant meaning. Abdulaziz Sager, chairman of the Gulf Research Center, noted its strong political message. He said it shows a clear desire among these influential states to work together on security matters. Such cooperation could make them diplomatically and militarily stronger.
Each country brings important strengths to this alliance. Turkey has the second-largest military in the NATO alliance. Saudi Arabia is a major oil exporter. It is also home to Islam’s holiest places. Pakistan is the only Muslim country that possesses nuclear weapons.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, along with army chief Asim Munir, attended the signing. They also performed the Umrah pilgrimage in Mecca. They met Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. His country has faced repeated attacks in recent times.
This agreement builds on long-standing military ties among the three countries. Pakistan has trained Saudi forces for many years. Turkey and Pakistan have exchanged warships and training aircraft. In 2023, Saudi Arabia bought Turkish drones in a large defense deal. Pakistan has also sent troops and air-defense systems to Saudi Arabia. This new alliance hopes to bring more security to a troubled region.
