New LPG Price Hike: Tk 70 More for Your 12kg Cylinder
The cost of cooking for many Bangladeshi families increased today. The price of privately supplied liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) has gone up. A 12-kilogram LPG cylinder now costs Tk 70 more. This increases its price from Tk 1,528 to Tk 1,598.
The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) announced these new prices. The commission made the announcement today, Sunday. New rates started from 6:00 pm on Sunday evening. The new price per kilogram of LPG is Tk 133.15. It was previously Tk 127.30 per kilogram.
This price adjustment comes as Bangladesh faces a shortage of piped natural gas. Many households increasingly rely on LPG for daily cooking. Retailers often sell LPG above the government-approved price. This has led to many complaints from consumers.
Global LPG prices surged after the Middle East war escalated. In April, Bangladesh saw its largest LPG price increase ever. A 12-kilogram cylinder went up by Tk 387. Another Tk 212 was added on April 19.
However, prices were reduced for two months. In June and July, customers paid less. Last month, the price of a 12-kilogram cylinder fell by Tk 357. This brought the price down to Tk 1,528.
The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission reviews LPG prices every month. It uses Saudi Arabia’s Aramco benchmark prices. These are for propane and butane, the main components of LPG. The commission also considers the average exchange rate. This is based on invoices from importing companies.
The price of LPG supplied by the state-owned company remains unchanged. A 12.5-kilogram cylinder from the state company still costs Tk 825. Also, the price of autogas, used for vehicles, has decreased. Autogas now costs Tk 70.40 per liter. Its previous price was Tk 86.93 per liter. BERC has been regulating LPG prices since April 2021.
