Trump Suggests Renaming Lake Ontario Amid Rising Trade Tensions
A trade dispute between the United States and Canada is growing more intense. US President Donald Trump recently suggested renaming Lake Ontario to “Lake America.” This unusual idea came as new tariffs are being placed between both countries.
Canada is expected to announce its response to the latest US tariffs today, Tuesday. The Canadian government stated its new measures will support workers and businesses. Officials will share more details at a press briefing.
New 50 percent US tariffs on Canadian goods started last Saturday. This happened after trade talks failed the day before. Experts say these duties affect about $20 billion in goods. This equals about 5.5 percent of Canada’s total exports to the United States.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada’s own tariffs will begin on September 8. This could lead to further actions from both sides. On Monday, President Trump also promised to double car tariffs to 50 percent next year. These would apply to non-US car parts.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford criticized President Trump’s car tariff threat. Mr. Ford used strong language in his reply. He also threatened to add a fee to electricity exports. Ontario had previously put a temporary 25 percent fee on electricity sent to three US states.
President Trump later criticized Premier Ford online. He warned of “far worse” outcomes. Mr. Trump also called the Canadian Prime Minister a “governor.” He repeated his suggestion for Canada to become the 51st US state.
President Trump’s recent tariffs will raise the US tariff rate on Canadian exports. Oxford Economics estimates this rate will increase from 5.1 percent to 6.9 percent. Tariffs on plastics, electrical machines, and wood products cause most of this increase. Manufacturers in Quebec, New Brunswick, and Ontario will be most affected.
Over the weekend, Prime Minister Carney said US negotiators made new demands at the last minute. These demands aimed to limit Canadian trade deals with other nations. He also said US officials threatened the French language and Quebec culture. Quebec is a French-speaking province in eastern Canada.
President Trump denied these claims on Tuesday. He said on Truth Social that he would “never interfere with Canadians speaking French!” Mr. Trump called the Prime Minister’s statements “a lie.” He added the Prime Minister made it up for political support.
The United States is Canada’s largest trading partner. Canadian exports to the US form 70 percent of its total exports. Canada is the second biggest trading partner for the United States in goods this year, after Mexico.
Recent surveys show Canadians largely support Prime Minister Carney’s decision to leave trade talks. However, some people worry about economic problems. The White House had accused Canada of unfair treatment of US alcohol, car, and dairy products.
Both countries also need to agree on changes to the US-Mexico-Canada free trade agreement (USMCA). President Trump has refused to renew it in its current form.
