Mother and Young Son Injured in Cox’s Bazar Refugee Camp Gunfight
A mother and her seven-year-old son were shot and injured on Thursday evening. The shooting happened during a gunfight between three armed Rohingya groups. The incident took place at a refugee camp in Ukhia, Cox’s Bazar.
The injured were Tahera Begum and her son, Mohammad Yusuf. They live in Block B-41 of Camp 8 East. Both are now receiving medical care at Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital.
The gunfight lasted for several hours. It started around 5:30 pm and continued on and off until about 10:30 pm. The violence happened in Blocks B-40 and B-41 of the Balukhali refugee settlement.
Police and witnesses said three groups were involved in the clash. They were the Arakan Rohingya Army (ARA), the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA), and the Arakan Rohingya Solidarity Organisation (RSO). These groups fought in the area before the gunfire began.
A police official stated that members of the Arakan Rohingya Army and the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army worked together. They reportedly opened fire on members of the Arakan Rohingya Solidarity Organisation. The reason for the clash is not yet clear.
Mohammad Riaz Uddin Ahmed leads the 8 Armed Police Battalion (APBn). This battalion is responsible for security at the camp. Mr. Ahmed confirmed that the situation is now under control.
Police have started an operation to find and arrest those involved in the shooting. They are working to identify all individuals who took part in the violence. The aim is to bring them to justice.
