New Pay Plan Brings Big Salary Boosts for Government Staff

The Bangladesh government has approved a major new pay structure for its employees. This plan is called the National Pay Structure 2026. It will increase basic salaries by 100 to 142 percent. This significant change will start in July this year.

New government employees will receive higher starting salaries and allowances. However, pay for existing staff will be calculated differently. Their new salaries depend on their current basic pay, service length, and increments.

The new structure significantly boosts pay across all 20 government grades. For example, a Grade 9 position’s basic salary will double. It rises from Tk 22,000 to Tk 44,000. Many Class I jobs, like Bangladesh Civil Service cadre posts, start at Grade 9.

Assistant teachers in government primary schools are in Grade 13. Their basic salary will start at Tk 24,000, up from Tk 11,000. Head teachers hold Grade 10 positions. Their basic pay will increase from Tk 16,000 to Tk 32,000.

Employees also receive several allowances. House rent allowance varies by location and grade. For instance, Dhaka employees get 50 percent of their basic salary. All employees receive Tk 1,500 for medical costs. Other benefits include education, festival, and mobile phone allowances.

The new pay increases will happen in four phases. For Grades 1 to 9, 40 percent of the basic salary rise comes in July. Another 30 percent follows in January 2027. The final 30 percent takes effect in July 2027.

For lower-income employees in Grades 10 to 20, 50 percent of the basic salary increase starts in July. Then, 25 percent comes in January 2027. The remaining 25 percent will be added in July 2027. All new allowances will apply from January 1, 2028.

Consider a new Grade 9 officer in Dhaka. By 2028, their total monthly salary and allowances could be around Tk 70,000. A new head teacher in Grade 10 could receive more than Tk 50,000. Existing employees will see similar large increases over time.

MPO-enlisted teachers and staff in private schools will also benefit. Their basic salaries and house rent allowances will go up. However, the exact amounts for these educators are still being finalized.

Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani confirmed the new structure. He stated that the Finance Division will issue an official order soon. This order will provide all the final details about the new pay plan.
