Former Minister Ishraque Hossain Steps Down Amid Firearm Controversy

Ishraque Hossain has resigned from his role as State Minister for Liberation War Affairs. He announced his resignation at a press conference on Monday. This decision followed a controversial anti-narcotics operation where he was seen holding a firearm.

At the National Press Club, Mr. Hossain defended his actions. He said he was sorry if he hurt anyone during the operation. However, he believed he did nothing wrong that day. He held the firearm only for self-protection, he explained.

Mr. Hossain stated that he told Prime Minister Tarique Rahman he wanted to leave his post. He wanted to focus on fighting drugs in Dhaka-6 and other areas. The Prime Minister kindly agreed to his request.

Sources close to the government said Prime Minister Rahman had instructed Mr. Hossain to resign. This instruction was given on Sunday after a Cabinet meeting.

The controversial incident happened on Saturday in Ghuntighar, Gandaria. Mr. Hossain took part in an anti-drug operation there. He was seen openly carrying a firearm. Others with him also had weapons.

A video of the incident quickly spread on social media. People questioned why a state minister was involved in such an operation with a visible weapon. This caused discomfort within the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and the government.

The incident was embarrassing because Prime Minister Rahman was making surprise visits. He was checking conditions at hospitals, schools, and government areas. Mr. Hossain felt his actions overshadowed the Prime Minister’s important work.

Initially, Mr. Hossain denied reports about his resignation. He called them rumors on social media. However, he officially announced his resignation on Monday morning via Facebook. He then confirmed it at the press conference later that day.

Mr. Hossain said he had informed the local police before going to Ghuntighar. He routinely carried his licensed firearm. He took it out to protect himself if there was danger. He also noted that the viral video showed drug users did not have firearms.

Despite resigning, Mr. Hossain confirmed he will continue his fight against drugs. He plans to work on this issue in the future.
