Prominent Businessman Arrested Again in Money Laundering Probe

Dhaka police arrested Dilip Kumar Agarwala, the managing director of Diamond World, on Monday evening. This arrest came as part of an ongoing investigation. Police are looking into a money laundering case against him. The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police made the arrest. They apprehended him in Banani, a busy area of the capital city.

Shafiqul Islam confirmed the news of the arrest. He serves as the additional commissioner (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police. Mr. Agarwala was transported to the DB office following his arrest. This is where he will be questioned about the case.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is leading the investigation. This government agency focuses on major crimes. They are specifically investigating the money laundering allegations against Mr. Agarwala. A source from the CID confirmed that the probe is active. This recent arrest is directly connected to their detailed work.

Mr. Agarwala holds a position in politics. He is a member of the central subcommittee on industry and commerce of the Awami League. The Awami League’s political activities have recently been banned across the country.

He also participated in the 12th parliamentary election. Mr. Agarwala sought election as an independent candidate. He represented the Chuadanga-1 constituency, which includes Alamdanga and part of Chuadanga Sadar. However, he did not win that election.

This current arrest is not Mr. Agarwala’s first encounter with law enforcement. The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested him earlier on September 3, 2024. This previous arrest occurred after the Awami League government lost power. A large public uprising led to the government’s fall.

Following his arrest in September, he was shown arrested in several murder cases. These were serious accusations against him. Mr. Agarwala fought these charges and secured bail in all cases. He was then released from prison on October 1 of last year.
