Bangladesh Government Pay: Salaries Won’t Just Double, Says Adviser
Government employees will soon see changes in their pay. However, their salaries will not simply double, according to a senior official. Zahed Ur Rahman, Information and Broadcasting Adviser to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, explained this today. He spoke at a press conference at the Secretariat.
The adviser clarified common misunderstandings about the new pay scale. Many people think their salaries will double. Mr. Rahman said this is not always true. He spoke to journalists about the government’s recent activities.
Mr. Rahman noted that many senior government employees already get higher salaries. This is due to regular salary increases over time. For these employees, their pay is already close to the new scale. So, their actual increase will not be a full doubling.
The adviser said the new pay scale aims to reduce financial differences. He emphasized that people should understand this point clearly. What looks like a 100 percent increase on paper might not be the actual take-home difference for everyone.
The Cabinet approved the new pay scale on Monday. Basic salaries for government employees will rise in three stages. These increases will start from July 1 of this year and continue through next year. New allowances will begin on January 1, 2028.
Under the new system, starting basic salaries will increase by 100 to 142 percent. This depends on the employee’s grade. Employees in Grades 1 to 11 will see a 100 percent rise in their basic pay. Those in Grades 12 to 20 will get increases ranging from 115 to 142 percent.
For example, the lowest basic salary, Grade 20, will go from Tk 8,250 to Tk 20,000. The highest basic salary, for Grade 1, will increase from Tk 78,000 to Tk 156,000. These changes aim to make pay fairer across all government ranks.
