Biman Bangladesh Airlines Plans Major $3.7 Billion Fleet Upgrade
Biman Bangladesh Airlines plans to buy 14 new Boeing airplanes. This decision involves an investment of about $3.7 billion. The large cost has caused public discussion. Some people wonder if Bangladesh should spend this much money now. The country faces economic challenges. Others see the purchase as a political issue. They criticize the government’s role.
However, this investment is about Biman’s future. It asks what the national airline should be like in 20 years. Airlines like Emirates and Qatar Airways invested for many years. They built modern airports and bought many planes. This helped them become global travel hubs. Passengers fly through their countries to many places.
Bangladesh is different. But it can learn from this experience. Aviation is a long-term business. Investments today can target markets that will grow in ten years or more. From this view, Biman’s plan needs careful thought.
The new fleet includes eight Boeing 787-10s. It also has two 787-9s and four 737-8s. These planes will fly to the Middle East, other regional places, and long-haul destinations. Deliveries will start in late 2031. They will continue until 2035. Bangladesh is making a choice for its aviation market in the 2030s.
There is also a financial reason to buy now. No one knows how much these planes will cost in five years. Prices can increase due to inflation. Production costs and supply chains also affect prices. Buying now could save money if prices rise later. This possible saving should be part of the decision.
Biman’s finances are strong. In the last financial year, it made over 11,559 crore taka in revenue. Its operating profit was 1,602 crore taka. Net profit reached more than 785 crore taka. Biman has been profitable for five years. It carried about 3.4 million passengers. It also earned 925 crore taka from cargo. A profitable company must decide if it wants to grow.
Biman already uses Boeing 787s and 737s. This is an operational benefit. The airline has experience with these types of planes. This helps with pilot training and maintenance. It also helps with spare parts management. New planes can also be more fuel efficient. This means significant savings over time.
This purchase is also part of Bangladesh’s trade relations with the United States. It connects to a wider trade agreement. This includes market access and other economic promises. So, the deal is more than just Biman’s own budget.
However, the deal must be clear to everyone. A multi-billion-dollar investment needs openness. The final price must be public. Loan costs and repayment times should be clear. The airline’s route plan and how it will use the planes are also important. If the government guarantees loans, then accountability becomes even more vital.
Buying planes is only one step. Success depends on what happens next. Biman must keep the planes flying. It needs to fill their seats. It must carry profitable cargo. It also needs to open the right routes. Dhaka can become an important connecting city for travelers. Bangladesh needs long-term planning to build a serious international airline. The real goal is to make these 14 aircraft a profitable business for the next two decades.
