Controversial Post Leads to Arrest of Former NCP Leader
Gazi Salahuddin Tanvir, a former joint member secretary of the National Citizen Party (NCP), was arrested early Wednesday morning. Police from Bogura district took him into custody in the Monipur area of Dhaka. He faces charges under the Cyber Security Act.
The arrest happened after a case was filed against Mr. Tanvir. The case relates to an offensive Facebook post he shared about Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. The National Citizen Party had already taken action against him for this post.
On July 31, the NCP temporarily removed Mr. Tanvir from his party duties. This decision came after the post became public. A case was then filed on August 2 at Bogura sadar police station.
HS Maftoon Ahmed Khan, president of Bogura Sadar Thana BNP, filed the case. Md. Mahfuz Alam, inspector (investigation) of Bogura sadar police station, confirmed the arrest. Inspector Alam said police would take Mr. Salahuddin to Bogura to present him before the court.
Sarjis Alam, chief organiser for the NCP’s northern region, reacted to the arrest on Facebook Wednesday. He alleged that the ruling BNP and the police were misusing their power. This happened even though the NCP had already disciplined Gazi Salahuddin.
Sarjis Alam said that Gazi Salahuddin posted only one sentence about Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. He deleted the post after the party raised objections. Mr. Salahuddin also expressed regret on Facebook and promised not to repeat such an act. Sarjis Alam still expressed anger over the arrest.
Mr. Tanvir was previously suspended by the NCP on April 21, 2025. This was due to claims of irregularities in deputy commissioner appointments. He was also accused of taking money for printing textbook paper. The party later withdrew that suspension order.
