Dramatic Collapse Seals Bangladesh’s Defeat in Zimbabwe T20 Opener
Bangladesh suffered a 32-run loss to Zimbabwe on Wednesday, marking a disappointing start to their three-match Twenty20 International series. The match, held at Queens Sports Club in Harare, saw the visitors struggle with their batting, ultimately crumbling under pressure. This victory gives Zimbabwe a 1-0 lead in the series.
Chasing a target of 171 runs, Bangladesh could only manage 138 runs before being dismissed in 19 overs. A critical batting collapse saw them lose their final five wickets for just eight runs across 14 deliveries. Yasir Ali, making his return to the T20I side after four years, was the sole significant contributor, scoring a maiden half-century with 54 runs off 38 balls. His dismissal, however, triggered the team’s rapid decline.
Zimbabwe’s fast bowlers proved to be the difference-makers. Richard Ngarava and Blessing Muzarabani caused significant problems for the Bangladeshi batsmen, sharing eight wickets between them. Ngarava finished with impressive figures of 4 wickets for 26 runs, while Muzarabani claimed 4 wickets for just 17 runs. Their combined effort dismantled Bangladesh’s batting lineup.
Bangladesh had a positive start to their chase, but Ngarava quickly took two wickets, removing openers Tanzid Hasan Tamim and Saif Hassan. Muzarabani then dismissed Parvez Hossain Emon, leaving Bangladesh struggling at 34 runs for 3 wickets within the first five overs. Despite Yasir Ali’s efforts, other batsmen like captain Towhid Hridoy and Nurul Hasan Sohan failed to build substantial partnerships.
Earlier in the day, Zimbabwe posted a challenging total of 170 runs for 6 wickets. Opener Brian Bennett led their scoring with a quick 44 runs off 30 balls. Bangladesh’s pacer Nahid Rana delivered a career-best performance, taking 4 wickets for 26 runs. He denied Bennett a half-century and picked up two wickets in a row in the later stages. However, a late surge from Ryan Burl, who scored an unbeaten 30, and Brad Evans, who blasted 19 off 10 balls, pushed Zimbabwe to their competitive score.
With Zimbabwe holding the advantage, Bangladesh will aim to bounce back in the second T20 International. That match is scheduled for Friday at the same venue, where Bangladesh will look to keep their hopes alive in the series.
