Heightened Security at Dhanmondi 32 as Police Detain Man
Security has been significantly increased around Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s former residence. This site is located at Dhanmondi 32 in Dhaka. The heightened security comes ahead of August 15. This date marks the National Mourning Day in Bangladesh. On this day in 1975, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was assassinated. Police detained a man near the residence on Saturday morning. He tried to lay flowers at the historic location.
From early Saturday, police established strict barricades. They blocked both sides of the road in front of the demolished residence. All vehicular traffic on the road was stopped completely. Pedestrians were also not allowed to enter or pass through the area. Many law enforcement officers were deployed throughout the surrounding locality. An armored police vehicle was also kept ready as a precautionary measure. Journalists from various media outlets gathered at the site. Curious onlookers also observed the situation unfold.
Around 10:15 AM, a man approached the barricaded area. He intended to offer flowers at the residence. Police officers promptly intervened and detained him. They then transported him to Dhanmondi police station. He is currently being held there for further questioning.
Mohammad Imdadul Islam is the Officer-in-Charge of Dhanmondi police station. He confirmed the detention of the individual. Mr. Islam identified the detainee as Arnab Das. Mr. Das is a resident of Tangail district. Police have initially learned that Mr. Das is an active worker. He belongs to the banned Jubo League organization. Police are now investigating his purpose for being at the site. They are also checking his background.
Officer Imdadul Islam stated that the security enhancement began on Friday night. This was a direct preparation for the August 15 observances. He emphasized that the police force is fully prepared.
