High Bounce, Hard Lessons: Bangladesh Cricket Prepares for Australia After Zimbabwe

The Bangladesh national cricket team recently concluded a challenging tour of Zimbabwe. While they celebrated a series victory in the Twenty20 International format, the team faced significant setbacks, including an innings defeat in the lone Test match and a loss in the One-Day International series. A major concern throughout the tour was the consistent struggle of Bangladesh’s batters against Zimbabwe’s fast bowlers.

This batting inconsistency spanned all formats, leading to disappointment among fans and experts. Mohammad Ashraful, the team’s batting coach, has taken responsibility for the struggles. Speaking to reporters upon the team’s return, he pointed to the unique playing conditions in Zimbabwe as a key factor.

Ashraful explained that the pitches in Zimbabwe offered extra bounce, which the Bangladeshi batters found difficult to adapt to quickly. “It took us some time to adjust,” he said, noting that adaptation began to improve by the third ODI. He expressed hope that this learning experience could aid preparations for major tournaments like the 2027 World Cup.

The tour saw Bangladesh avoid the rare prospect of losing all three series only by securing a dramatic four-wicket win in the final T20I match. However, a stark statistic from the tour was the absence of any centuries scored by Bangladesh’s batters across all games. This highlighted the depth of their struggles against the local conditions and bowling attack.

Ashraful also highlighted a change in modern international cricket schedules. He believes that the rise of franchise tournaments has reduced opportunities for teams to play warm-up matches before a full series. “In the past, a three-day game or an ODI before the series helped us adapt,” he explained. “Now, teams often arrive and begin playing immediately.”

A more formidable challenge now awaits Bangladesh. In August, the team will travel to Australia for a two-match Test series, marking their first Test tour there in 23 years. This upcoming series will again test the batters’ ability to handle fast bowling and pitches with extra bounce.

Despite the difficulties faced in Zimbabwe, Coach Ashraful remains optimistic. He believes the lessons learned from adapting to the challenging conditions will be invaluable for the tour Down Under. He acknowledged that while the team had performed well in their home conditions for several months, adjusting to a “completely different environment” takes time.
