MP’s ‘Private Moment’ Video Causes Stir as Lawmaker Cites Second Marriage
A video appearing to show a private moment involving Member of Parliament Gazi Nazrul Islam has sparked widespread debate and criticism in Satkhira, Bangladesh. The viral clips, which began circulating on social media Monday night, feature Gazi Nazrul Islam in close proximity with a young woman. Mr. Islam represents the Satkhira-4 (Shyamnagar) constituency for Jamaat-e-Islami.
Initially, some Jamaat leaders and activists suggested online that the videos might have been created using artificial intelligence (AI). However, on Tuesday afternoon, Gazi Nazrul Islam clarified the situation on his Facebook page. He stated that the woman in the videos is Mariam Begum, his second wife. He explained that they were married on June 17 in a family ceremony held at Mariam’s father’s home in Dhaka, with the full consent of his first wife.
The videos have prompted strong reactions from across the political spectrum. Abu Zahid, a senior member of the Satkhira District BNP, expressed his disapproval. Speaking by phone, he described the MP’s actions as “deeply shameful” for a public figure and a senior individual, calling it a “complete lack of judgment.” Mr. Zahid also demanded a thorough investigation into the incident.
Leaders from allied student organizations also voiced their concerns. Shahin Islam, an organizing secretary of the Satkhira district unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, stated in a video message that the situation was “very unfortunate.” He suggested that Gazi Nazrul Islam should resign from his public office and called for Jamaat to take appropriate disciplinary measures according to its party rules.
Within Jamaat circles, disappointment was evident. Al Mamun, a former student leader in Satkhira, lamented online that the incident had “stained our beloved caravan.” Other commenters on his post echoed similar sentiments, with one writing, “Now it seems we have no choice but to stay behind closed doors.” Another activist emphasized the need for “exemplary punishment” to show the party does not condone such actions from its members.
Many residents of Satkhira have continued to share their views on Facebook. The issue has led to heated exchanges, criticism, and condemnation across social media platforms. The incident has raised questions about the conduct of public officials and the image of political parties in Bangladesh.
