Political Tensions Rise as Bangladesh Seeks Return of Former Prime Minister
Bangladesh’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Shama Obaed Islam, confirmed today that diplomatic efforts are underway to facilitate the return of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Upon her surrender, Ms. Hasina will face legal action, which includes immediate imprisonment, according to the minister.
Ms. Islam emphasized that the government will strictly follow the law. She stated that if Sheikh Hasina surrenders, whether in Bangladesh or another country like India, she will be sent to jail. The legal process will then proceed as mandated.
The minister highlighted that Sheikh Hasina has already been convicted. Therefore, her statements or any considerations regarding her status as a convicted person are not relevant to the government’s legal obligations. The focus remains on the enforcement of existing laws.
Bangladesh has formally requested India to extradite Sheikh Hasina. This request has been made under the terms of the current extradition treaty between the two nations. Diplomatic discussions are ongoing to ensure her return.
Once Sheikh Hasina is back in Bangladesh, the legal system will determine the subsequent steps. The government’s role is to ensure that the established legal framework is applied without exception.
Regarding Sheikh Hasina’s recent comments about returning to Bangladesh in December, Ms. Islam offered an interpretation. She suggested that these remarks are likely an attempt to motivate leaders and activists of the Awami League. Many of these individuals have either gone into hiding or left the country.
The state minister clarified that the choice of when and where to surrender rests with Sheikh Hasina. However, the government’s responsibility is to pursue all legal avenues to secure her return to face justice.
