Mystery Explosion Hurts Three, Child Among Injured in Barishal
A mysterious explosion in Bakerganj Upazila, Barishal, injured three people on Monday morning. A child was among those hurt. The blast happened in Dudhalmou Village of Bhorpasha Union. A sand-filled sack near a house suddenly exploded.
The victims are Hanufa Begum, her daughter Iti Akter, 18, and her grandson Fahim, 15. All three suffered burn injuries. They were first taken to Bakerganj Upazila Health Complex. Later, doctors sent them to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal for better care.
Barishal Superintendent of Police AZM Mustafizur Rahman spoke about the incident. He said officers do not know what kind of explosive caused the blast. They also do not know if more explosive materials are at the site. A Bomb Disposal Unit from Dhaka will arrive later today to help.
The superintendent assured the public there is no reason to panic. He said police are looking into the matter fully.
Jamal Hossain, son of homeowner Shah Alam Hawlader, described the explosion. He said it happened around 7:00 AM in a sand-filled sack. The sack was kept beside their house. The blast set fire to the clothes of his mother, sister, and nephew.
They immediately jumped into the nearby Tulatala River. Local residents quickly came to help them. They rescued the three injured family members from the water.
A neighbour, Enayet Hossain, heard a loud sound early in the morning. He came outside and learned about the injuries next door. He said no one understood how the explosion occurred.
After the incident, several groups visited the scene. Members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and the Detective Branch (DB) of the police were present. Senior police officials also came. They marked off the area where the blast happened. Officers spoke to local people to gather information.
Bakerganj police station Officer-in-Charge Adil Hossain said the incident is serious. He confirmed that police are investigating it. Law enforcement agencies have not yet said if the object involved was a bomb.
Nurse Linkon Dutta from Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital gave an update. He said all three victims came to the male surgery ward. The two female patients then moved to the female surgery ward. He could not confirm how serious their burn injuries were.
