New Book Reveals King Charles’s Reaction to Princess Diana’s Death
A new book by Charles Spencer, Princess Diana’s brother, makes a surprising claim. He says King Charles sounded “giddily elated” after Diana died in 1997. Mr. Spencer believes the then-Prince Charles felt free to marry again. These new details were shared from Mr. Spencer’s upcoming book. They were published in the Daily Mail newspaper.
Mr. Spencer recalled speaking with King Charles shortly after Diana’s death was confirmed. He wrote that Charles’s voice sounded “like a lottery winner.” Mr. Spencer thought King Charles’s first reaction might have been about marrying Camilla Parker Bowles. Charles and Diana had separated in 1992. They divorced in 1996. Diana had spoken publicly about Charles’s relationship with Camilla. She said there were “three of us in this marriage.” King Charles married Camilla in 2005.
King Charles’s spokesperson responded earlier this week to initial claims from the book. The spokesperson stated that grief can affect a person’s reason, judgment, and memory. This can happen even many years after a great loss. King Charles himself has not commented on these latest details from the book.
The book also shares sad personal information about Diana. Mr. Spencer wrote that in her later years, Princess Diana visited Beachy Head. This is a very high chalk cliff on Britain’s south coast. She went there more than once. At these times, she was thinking about ending her life. However, her deep love for her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, stopped her.
Princess Diana was only 36 years old when she died. Her car crashed in Paris in 1997. The car was moving very fast. It was trying to escape from photographers on motorbikes.
A Buckingham Palace spokesperson reaffirmed their previous statement. They said the King understands how much pain grief can bring. They also explained how it can cloud one’s judgment and memory. These effects can last for many years, even if others do not fully understand them.
