Prime Minister Tarique Rahman Directs Major Changes to Untangle Dhaka Traffic
Dhaka faces severe traffic congestion daily. To solve this problem, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today ordered several new measures. He chaired a meeting at his Tejgaon office. The Prime Minister asked for actions to make city travel easier and faster.
He directed shifting the Fulbaria Bus Terminal to Keraniganj. This project needs new land. A temporary bus terminal will also be built within four months. This will be on 15 acres of land at the Jhilmil project. The Gabtoli Bus Terminal will be expanded. This will help manage vehicles better.
Another important step is to move the Kawran Bazar kitchen market. It will relocate to Gabtoli. This change aims to reduce traffic pressure in the Kawran Bazar area.
The Prime Minister also asked for Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) systems. These will be installed on expressway and flyover toll plazas. This will make toll collection quicker. He wants this work finished within four months.
For the Jatrabari-Gulistan Flyover, a report by BUET will be reviewed. BUET will submit new recommendations within 15 days. City corporation and traffic police will help coordinate this work.
Parking facilities around the Secretariat will improve. Officials will check possible parking spots at Osmani Memorial Auditorium. They will also look at other suitable locations nearby.
A new policy will be made to control auto-rickshaws in Dhaka. The authorities must also act against unauthorised double-decker sleeper buses.
The Prime Minister stressed the need for government agencies to work together. He also highlighted completing all tasks on time. Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam attended the meeting. Other senior officials were also present.
