Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has announced more support for Bangladesh’s Hindu and Buddhist communities. He increased grants for their religious festivals. The government also extended holidays for the upcoming Sharadiya Durga Puja.
The Hindu Religious Welfare Trust had asked for Tk 40 million for Durga Puja. The Prime Minister allocated Tk 50 million instead. This was Tk 10 million more than the requested amount.
Similarly, the Buddhist Religious Welfare Trust requested Tk 20 million. This was for the Kathin Chibar Dan ceremony. The Prime Minister approved Tk 30 million, an extra Tk 10 million. These funds show the government’s special consideration.
The government also extended the public holiday for Sharadiya Durga Puja. Government employees will now enjoy five consecutive days off. The holidays will run from October 20 to October 24.
October 20, for Navami, is an executive order holiday. October 21, for Bijoya Dashami, is a general holiday. The Prime Minister announced that October 22, a Thursday, will also be a holiday. October 23 and 24 are the regular weekly days off.
This longer break gives Hindu community members more time to celebrate their festival. It allows for a more complete and comfortable experience.
Banks and financial institutions will also close on these public holidays. However, digital services like ATMs, cards, and online banking will continue to operate. This follows directives from Bangladesh Bank.
Employees in essential services must still work. This includes hospitals, police, fire services, and utilities like electricity, gas, and water. Some necessary institutions, such as media organizations, may also require staff to be on duty.
Bijon Kanti Sarkar is a special assistant to Prime Minister Rahman. He handles Hindu, Buddhist, Christian, and minority affairs. Mr. Sarkar praised the Prime Minister’s initiative. He said it shows true sincerity.
Mr. Sarkar added that the extra holiday and increased grants demonstrate a positive attitude. He believes it reflects the Prime Minister’s favorable view towards all communities in Bangladesh.
