Trump Plans New AI Adviser and “AI Force”
Former US President Donald Trump announced plans to appoint a new artificial intelligence (AI) adviser. He also aims to create an “AI force.” Mr. Trump shared these ideas in a social media post on Saturday. He did not give details on how these plans would work.
Many lawmakers in Washington worry about AI technology. They fear risks to people and property. Earlier this month, a former AI researcher named Jacob Coxon spoke out. He said that people building AI truly believe it could harm everyone by 2030.
Mr. Trump has often said these AI concerns are not serious. He believes new rules are not needed. He wrote on Truth Social, his social media platform, that the US will not stop the growth of this amazing industry. Instead, he said the US will help it grow. He also said existing justice systems can handle any “bad” aspects of AI easily.
If Mr. Trump acts on this plan, it would be his second AI adviser appointment. Venture capitalist David Sacks was the first AI adviser. He left the role in spring and became an external adviser. Mr. Sacks also doubts the need for new AI rules.
Speaking at a Politico event, Mr. Sacks said AI developers should ensure their products are safe. He believes they should be responsible if problems happen. He added that new federal rules are not necessary. The White House has not yet replied to Mr. Trump’s post.
Mr. Trump’s announcement comes before his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. This meeting is scheduled for Thursday. Both Washington and Beijing want to lead in AI development. Both governments see AI as key to their economic and military power.
Mr. Trump and some tech leaders argue that too many rules would slow US AI progress. They say it would hurt American companies against Chinese rivals. Safety advocates often disagree with this idea. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will meet with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng to discuss AI security, trade, and other economic topics. This meeting will be on Sunday in New York.
