Veteran Actor Ilias Kanchan Returns Home After Long Cancer Battle in UK
Veteran actor Ilias Kanchan has returned to Bangladesh. He spent more than 15 months receiving medical treatment. Mr. Kanchan is also the Chairman of Nirapad Sarak Chai (NISCHA). He departed London’s Heathrow Airport on Sunday night, Bangladesh time. He arrived in Dhaka on Monday afternoon. His wife and son-in-law travelled with him.
NISCHA Vice-Chairman Liton Ershad confirmed this news. Ilias Kanchan went to London in April last year. He was diagnosed with a brain tumour. He stayed at his daughter Ima Islam’s home during treatment.
In August last year, Mr. Kanchan had brain surgery in a London hospital. Doctors removed a large part of the tumour. They could not remove it completely due to risks. Physicians later told his family that he had brain cancer.
After the operation, Mr. Kanchan began a long course of treatment. The first phase involved three months of chemotherapy. Then he started oral therapy for the second phase. Family sources said he had about 100 chemotherapy sessions. This included a 12-week period. During that time, he received treatment five days a week.
Despite the long treatment, his physical condition has not improved greatly. Liton Ershad shared that Mr. Kanchan became restless abroad. He strongly wanted to return home. The third phase of his therapy ended on July 30. He will start a new treatment course later. He wished to spend some months in Bangladesh first.
Doctors told Liton Ershad that the cancer has not spread. It remains in the original area. This is a positive sign. Ilias Kanchan can now speak slowly. His speech is still difficult. He often struggles to finish sentences after talking for a few minutes. His eating habits are mostly normal. However, he no longer eats at regular times.
