Iran Closes Vital Oil Route Amid Escalating Gulf Tensions
Iran announced Sunday it has closed the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime passage for global oil shipments. The decision follows claims that a vessel traveled an unapproved route and was struck, with Iran warning of a “severe response” to any retaliation. This closure immediately heightens instability in a region already facing surging energy prices and global inflation.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy stated that a vessel, which had allegedly jeopardized maritime security by turning off its tracking systems, was hit and stopped. The IRGC also claimed several other ships tried to use an “unauthorized route” and ignored warnings. The strait will remain closed “until further notice” and “until the end of US interference in this region,” the statement added.
The United States quickly responded, with senior officials demanding that Iran publicly commit to stopping attacks on ships in the strait. They also insisted that all shipping lanes must remain open without imposing new tolls through the vital waterway.
Despite an escalation of hostilities this past week, US President Donald Trump indicated on Friday that the US and Iran had agreed to continue discussions. However, Trump also declared an end to the ceasefire agreement between the two nations.
About one-fifth of the world’s oil supply typically transits through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s effective blockade of this passage has already led to a significant increase in energy prices globally. Oman is actively mediating efforts to end the conflict, with Omani and Iranian negotiators continuing talks on safe passage mechanisms.
Recent events saw three Qatari and Saudi commercial tankers come under fire, prompting US strikes on Iranian sites. Iran retaliated with strikes on US military sites in Gulf states. Iran has accused the US of violating the ceasefire, particularly after the US revoked a license allowing the sale of Iranian crude oil.
Adding to the volatile situation, Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, issued a statement Saturday vowing vengeance for the death of his predecessor and father. Concurrently, President Trump announced he had ordered the US military to prepare thousands of missiles should Tehran attempt to assassinate him, following intelligence reports shared by Israel.
