Sudden Tornado Damages Dozens of Tourist Amenities at Popular Cox’s Bazar Beach
More than one hundred beach chairs and umbrellas were destroyed when a rare tornado swept through Sugandha Point on Cox’s Bazar beach today, Friday. The brief but intense weather event caused immediate panic among tourists enjoying the popular seaside location, though thankfully no injuries or casualties were reported.
The unexpected tornado struck at approximately 2:45 pm. Witnesses described the swirling winds lasting for a short period, estimated between three to five minutes. During this time, the strong gusts lifted and broke numerous items set up for visitors, turning a calm afternoon into a scene of scattered debris.
Tourists at Sugandha Point were seen reacting quickly, many abandoning their spots and rushing away from the beachfront in search of safety. The sudden appearance of the tornado created a moment of chaos, as people tried to understand what was happening and protect themselves from the powerful winds.
Mahbubur Rahman, who presides over the Cox’s Bazar Kitkot Business Owners’ Association, confirmed the extent of the destruction. He stated that the tornado moved from the sea, across the sandy shore, before making landfall directly where many tourist amenities were located. His association reported that 52 wooden beach chairs and 61 large beach umbrellas were completely ruined.
While the material damage represents a significant loss for local vendors who rely on these items for their livelihood, the community expressed relief that no one was harmed. The area quickly began clean-up efforts following the tornado’s rapid departure, aiming to restore the popular beach spot for future visitors.
