Health Crisis Forces Bangladesh President to Step Down
President Mohammed Shahabuddin of Bangladesh has officially resigned from his role, citing severe health complications. His resignation letter was submitted to Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad, Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, who announced the departure at a press conference. The Speaker confirmed President Shahabuddin’s decision was based purely on his deteriorating health.
“He is seriously ill,” the Speaker stated, explaining that multiple medical conditions had made the President physically and mentally unable to fulfill the demanding responsibilities of his office. President Shahabuddin has been battling heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and kidney problems. He had previously undergone heart surgery. More recently, he was diagnosed with a condition that causes brief fainting spells, further impacting his ability to serve.
President Shahabuddin was sworn in on April 24, 2023, as Bangladesh’s 22nd President. Nominated by the Awami League, he was elected without opposition for a five-year term. His presidency was due to continue until April 2028.
His tenure saw a major political shift in Bangladesh. The Awami League government fell following a student-led uprising on August 5, 2024. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the country. President Shahabuddin remained in office through several critical phases, including the dissolution of Parliament and the formation of an interim government.
Following the uprising, student leaders called for his removal. However, the interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, did not take steps to remove him. After a subsequent general election, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) returned to power. Despite the new government being from a different political party than the one that nominated Shahabuddin, they did not immediately seek his departure. Nevertheless, questions about his future persisted.
Recent media reports claimed President Shahabuddin had spoken with former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is in India, while he was in London for medical treatment in May. These reports fueled fresh speculation about his position. On Thursday, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, when asked about a possible resignation, advised reporters to await Friday’s developments. He also stated the government had no knowledge of any phone conversation with Sheikh Hasina.
Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad unexpectedly returned to Dhaka on Friday, two days earlier than planned from a medical trip to Thailand. A few hours after his arrival, he announced the President’s resignation.
With the presidential office now vacant, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad will serve as Acting President. The Constitution requires a new presidential election within 90 days. The President is chosen by members of parliament. As the ruling BNP holds a strong majority in parliament, their chosen nominee is expected to become the next Head of State. Discussions among senior BNP leaders regarding potential successors have already begun.
