IELTS Score Validity: A Two-Year Window for Global Dreams
Many people dream of studying, working, or living abroad. To do this, most need to pass the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam. It is important to know how long your IELTS score stays valid. The IELTS Test Report Form has a fixed expiry date.
Your IELTS score is usually valid for two years. This period starts from the day your results are issued. This rule applies in most countries. Your Test Report Form (TRF) shows your overall score. It also lists individual scores for listening, reading, writing, and speaking. The TRF clearly states the score’s validity period.
After two years, your score is generally not accepted. Universities will not take it for admission. Employers will not accept it for job applications. Visa offices will not approve it for study or work visas. If your score expires, you must take the IELTS test again.
Most universities in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand follow this rule. They do not accept IELTS scores older than two years. Always check if your score will be valid when you apply. For permanent residency in Canada, your IELTS score must stay valid through the entire application process.
Some special conditions exist. Certain skilled migration programs in Australia might accept IELTS scores up to three years old. However, this is not a general rule. Always check the specific program requirements.
IELTS now offers a “One Skill Retake” option. This allows candidates to retake just one part of the test. You can choose to retake listening, reading, writing, or speaking. This option is for candidates who feel one score does not show their true English level.
If you choose One Skill Retake, you get a new Test Report Form. This new form can be used for study or immigration. You must book the retake within 60 days of your first IELTS test. The updated result is also usually valid for two years. However, not all universities or immigration offices accept One Skill Retake results. You must check their rules before choosing this option.
Remember, your IELTS score is valid for two years from the test date. If you plan to study, work, or migrate, check your score’s validity. Make sure it covers your entire application process. Experts advise scheduling your IELTS test wisely. Take it close to university deadlines and visa application times. This helps avoid your score expiring too soon. For example, a test taken on August 1, 2026, will generally be valid until July 31, 2028. After this date, you will need a new test for most applications.
