Danube River Reveals Ancient Secret: Mammoth Bones Emerge in Bulgaria
The Danube River’s water levels are unusually low. This has led to a remarkable discovery in Bulgaria. Ancient bones believed to be from a woolly mammoth have appeared.
The find was made near Ruse, a city in northeastern Bulgaria. Nikolay Nenov confirmed the discovery. He is the director of the Regional Historical Museum.
Mr. Nenov told news agencies that the bones likely belonged to a woolly mammoth. This giant animal lived during the Ice Age.
Experts found several bones. These included a jaw bone and parts of tusks. They also found a shoulder blade and a large leg bone.
Mr. Nenov said the animal was likely young. The bones are dark in color. This might mean the mammoth lived in a muddy, wet area.
This discovery is very important. The bones are well preserved. Also, all the bones were found together in one spot. This shows they came from the same animal.
Woolly mammoths lived alongside early humans. Humans hunted these large, hairy animals for food. They also used the tusks and bones to make tools.
These impressive creatures disappeared about 4,000 years ago. For many decades, scientists have found small pieces of mammoth remains. These include tusks, bones, teeth, and hair.
A local resident found the bones by accident on Wednesday. This happened in Ryahovo village, in the Ruse region. Museum experts collected the bones the next day.
The Danube River flows through ten countries. It stretches from Germany to the Black Sea. Parts of the river are at record low levels.
This is because of long periods without rain. There have also been many hot days since May. These conditions have caused the river to shrink.
Specialists now plan to search the area again. Mr. Nenov hopes they will find more ancient remains there.
