Dengue Claims Highest Daily Toll in Bangladesh This Year
Nine people died from dengue fever in Bangladesh in 24 hours. This period was from Monday morning to Tuesday morning. This is the highest number of dengue deaths recorded in a single day this year. The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) shared these figures on Tuesday.
During the same 24 hours, 1,571 new dengue patients were admitted to hospitals. This is also the highest daily number of hospitalizations this year. The previous highest daily number was 1,558 patients on September 6. The total number of people who have died from dengue this year is now 130. The total number of patients admitted to hospitals has reached 45,475.
Among the new patients, 196 were admitted in Dhaka North City Corporation. Another 134 patients were admitted in Dhaka South City Corporation. Hospitals in Dhaka division, outside the two city corporations, received 408 patients. Across other divisions, Khulna admitted 242 patients, Barishal 142, and Chattogram 117. Mymensingh admitted 77 patients, Rangpur 71, Rajshahi 116, and Sylhet 8. Khulna division has recorded the highest number of total dengue hospitalizations this year, with 7,298 patients.
Bangladesh first saw a major dengue outbreak in 2000. Dengue cases have been reported every year since then. A big surge in cases happened in 2019. The year 2023 saw the worst outbreak on record. In 2023, 321,179 patients were admitted to hospitals. That year also had the highest number of dengue deaths, with 1,705 people dying. These numbers were higher than in any of the previous 23 years.
