Saudi Arabia and the United States recently launched military strikes in Iraq. These attacks targeted armed groups in the country. The Saudi Ministry of Defense announced the strikes. They happened early on Wednesday. The ministry said the actions were coordinated with US Central Command (CENTCOM).
The strikes came in response to recent drone attacks. These drones had targeted Saudi oil facilities and cities. Saudi air defenses successfully stopped several drones. These drones tried to hit petroleum sites in the Eastern Province and Riyadh regions. The Saudi statement said these drones were launched from Iraqi territory. It blamed groups aligned with Iran for these attacks.
Saudi Arabia stated it does not want more conflict. However, it also warned it would respond to any aggression. The country emphasized its right to defend itself.
Following these events, Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi is expected to visit Saudi Arabia on Thursday. Days before his trip, he ordered Iraqi security agencies to investigate the drone attacks. The Iraqi military had earlier stated its position. It said Iraq is committed to stopping its land from being used for attacks. This applies to attacks against any friendly country.
The Islamic Resistance in Iraq denied responsibility for the drone attacks. This is an umbrella group of armed organizations supported by Iran. The group called the Saudi claims “fabrications.” It warned of a harsh response if Saudi Arabia took any “foolish action.”
